As the 31st Fédération Internationale du Sport Universitaire (FISU) Summer World University Games unfolded in the vibrant city of Chengdu, China, the global sporting community gathered to witness a celebration of youthful talent, camaraderie, and the spirit of international unity. From July 28 to August 8, 2023, athletes from diverse backgrounds would compete in an array of sports, showcasing the transformative power of sportsmanship and the significance of fostering strong international friendships.

The Games’ opening ceremony, attended by Chinese President Xi Jinping, set the stage for this extraordinary event with the theme song “Make Dreams Come True.” This stirring anthem embodied the passion, courage, and dreams of global youth converging in Chengdu to showcase talent and determination. As participants and spectators united in celebration, the Games served as a testament to the profound impact that sports can have on uniting people across borders and cultures.

The FISU Summer World University Games are not just a display of athletic prowess—they represent the FISU spirit to stand against discrimination based on race, religion, or politics. This inclusivity fosters a sense of camaraderie among athletes, reinforcing the belief that sports can bridge gaps and promote mutual understanding among nations. By competing on an international stage, young athletes exemplify the power of unity and the shared value of fair play.

The Games involve a wide array of sports including archery, artistic gymnastics, athletics, badminton, basketball, diving, fencing, judo, rhythmic gymnastics, swimming, table tennis, taekwondo, tennis, volleyball, and water polo. In addition to the standard events, according to relevant rules, the organizing country/region can select another three optional sports for inclusion. For the Chengdu Games, the optional sports were rowing, sport shooting, and wushu (Chinese martial arts). These sports offered additional opportunities for athletes to compete and displayed their skills. This diverse lineup not only provided athletes opportunities to shine but also allowed attendees a thrilling spectacle of talent and dedication.

Chengdu, with rich cultural heritage and modern amenities, has been proven to be an ideal host city for the FISU Summer World University Games. The seamless blend of tradition and innovation fostered an exciting environment that captured the essence of Chinese hospitality. The FISU Games Village at Chengdu University created a melting pot of cultures, where athletes forged friendships and engaged in cultural exchange, enriching their experience far beyond competition.

Among the talented athletes who prepared for the Games were students from Odisha’s universities including KIIT University and Sambalpur University who also earned well-deserved spots on various Indian Universities Teams. These exceptional individuals represented their universities in athletics, badminton, and volleyball. Their selection testified to their dedication and talent, and they are poised to make a big mark on the global stage. Their enthusiasm to compete in athletics, badminton, and volleyball showcased India’s growing presence in the global sports arena. These young athletes embodied a spirit of excellence and served as role models for aspiring sports enthusiasts across India.

President Xi’s presence at the opening ceremony added immense significance to the Games, emphasizing China’s commitment to promoting sportsmanship and empowering its youth. His vision for a future in which young people play a transformative role in shaping the nation and the world inspired participants to reach for their dreams and work towards a brighter future.

China’s dedication to sports and health is evident from its ambitious goal to become a leading sports power by 2050. Its hosting of the Beijing 2022 Winter Olympics and Paralympics exemplified China’s abilities to leverage sports to enhance public well-being and promote active lifestyles.

For Chengdu, the FISU Summer World University Games represented an opportunity to leave a lasting legacy on sports infrastructure that would benefit the local population long after the event.
